Josiah Gregg's Santa Fe trail trip, chronicled in Commerce of the Prairies (1844), is a wonderful travelogue and good for kids to read, because it gives a sense of what it was like NOT to travel in an air conditioned minivan with a DVD player and handheld computer games.
