Our daughter participated in the Project GUTS program at Santa Fe Institute this summer for two weeks and will continue the program through the school year. In the summer workshop, she got an in-depth look at complex systems, models and simulation, and learned to create computer models from scratch. During the school year, she'll investigate problems, interview experts, gather data, and run experiments on computer models. We had never pegged her for a kid who could (or would enjoy) software programming but we were wrong. The facilitators are from the Santa Fe Institute and Massachusetts Institute of Technology and she was introduced to concepts of modeling and simulation of complex systems through a computer modeling tool called StarLogo. Hmph, we thought she just liked art!
Our daughter's SFI blog is here.
