The pilgrimage leads here. El Santuario de Chimayó was built on the site where, believers say, a mysterious light came from the ground on Good Friday night in 1810. (It is a small, colonial-style church made of adobe, stone and wood.) Some men from the village investigated the phenomenon, trying to find its source. Pushing away the earth, they found a large wooden crucifix, and soon built a santuario (chapel) on the site.
